The Effect
A bottle is filled with water and some of the water is poured out to show that everything is genuine.
The bottle is turned upside down, yet the water remains inside.
Toothpicks are then pushed through the bottle opening and visibly float upward through the water.

What You’ll Need
🧴 Plastic Bottle
Use a clear bottle with a smooth, even opening.
💧 Water
Fill the bottle almost to the top.
⭕ Clear Plastic Disc
Cut from transparent packaging to match the bottle mouth.
🪵 Toothpicks
Use lightweight toothpicks or matchsticks for the floating phase.
Cut the Plastic Disc
Cut a small circular disc from clear plastic packaging.
Make it the same size as the mouth of the bottle so it covers the opening completely.
Make the Central Hole
Carefully make a small hole in the centre of the disc.
The hole should be just large enough for a toothpick or matchstick to pass through.
Prepare The Bottle
Fill the bottle almost completely with water.
Leave only a small air gap so the disc can seal against the opening.
Cover the Bottle Opening
Hold the clear disc in your palm near the fingertips.
Place your hand over the bottle and press the disc flat against the opening.
Keep firm pressure on the disc while holding the bottle with your other hand.
Turn Bottle Upside Down
Turn the bottle over slowly while continuing to press the disc against the mouth.
Perform this over a sink or tray during practice.
Once the bottle is inverted and stable, carefully remove the hand supporting the disc.
Insert a Toothpick
Guide a toothpick through the small hole in the centre of the disc.
Push it gently until it enters the bottle.
Watch It Float Upward
Once released inside the bottle, the lightweight toothpick rises through the water.
Repeat with one or two more toothpicks if the seal remains stable.
Release The Water
When you are ready to finish, give the bottle a small shake or disturb the seal.
The disc will release and the water will pour out, creating a strong ending.
The Science Behind the Trick
The clear disc forms a seal across the bottle opening.
Air pressure outside the bottle helps hold the disc in place while surface tension around the small hole helps prevent the water from escaping.
The toothpick is light enough to pass through the hole without immediately breaking the seal.
🔬 Why the Disc Is Hard to See
Transparent plastic becomes difficult to notice when pressed flat against the wet bottle opening, especially from a normal audience distance.
Performance Tips
Use clean, transparent plastic with no printed markings.
Keep fingers over the bottle mouth until the bottle is fully inverted.
Hold the bottle steady and avoid sudden movements.
Present the toothpicks as an extra test after the water has already appeared to defy gravity.

Pour out a little water before the effect begins. This proves that the bottle and water are genuine and makes the later seal seem more impossible.

Do not cut the disc too small.

Test the setup over a sink before performing for anyone.
Practice Plan
First practise placing and holding the disc without water.
Next test the seal with a partially filled bottle over a sink.
Once reliable, practise turning the bottle upside down and removing your hand smoothly.
Add the toothpick phase only after the seal works consistently.
