What Is a Hypercard?
A Hypercard is a playing card cut and folded into a shape that appears to pass through itself.
The finished object looks impossible because the card seems to twist in a way that a flat piece of cardboard should not allow.
Double-backed cards make the illusion even stronger because there is no obvious front or back.
What You’ll Need
🃏 One Playing Card
Use a clean card that is not badly bent or creased.
✂️ Scissors
Small sharp scissors give the cleanest cuts.
📏 Flat Surface
A table helps keep the cuts and folds controlled.
Make the First Cut
Cut inward from the right side of the card.
Stop when you reach the centre.
Keep the cut straight and do not go beyond the midpoint.
Make the Second Cut
Cut inward from the left side.
Again, stop at the centre of the card.
The two side cuts should line up closely.
Turn the Card Over
Flip the card over.
Make a final cut from the middle of the remaining edge toward the centre.
Stop where the earlier cuts meet.
Fold the Right Section
Lift the lower-right portion of the card.
Fold it upward until its edge aligns with the top edge.
Make a light crease through the centre section.
Fold the Left Section Back
Fold the lower-left portion away from you.
Bring it upward until it meets the top edge on the reverse side.
Add another gentle centre crease.
Untwist the Shape
Carefully open and untwist the card.
Work slowly so the narrow centre sections do not tear.
The impossible-looking structure will begin to appear.
Flatten and Display
Place the finished Hypercard on a flat surface.
Adjust the folds until it lies as neatly as possible.
Display it where viewers can study the impossible shape.

Why It Looks Impossible
The three cuts separate the card into linked sections while leaving the centre connected.
The opposite folds reverse the orientation of the two halves.
When opened, the card appears to pass through itself even though it remains one unbroken object.

Keep the centre creases neat and avoid over-folding.
