The Effect
A Playing Card Floats Beneath Your Hand
Place a playing card beneath your palm while your hand rests on the table. Slowly raise your hand and the card appears to rise with it, apparently floating in mid-air.
Once your hand is above the table, use your free hand to pluck the floating card away and drop it onto the table.
💡 Start With One Card
The original routine can be performed with several cards, but one card is much easier while learning the handling. Add more only after the basic movement feels natural.
The Secret
A Tiny Hidden Support
The card is secretly held beneath your hand by a matchstick trapped under a finger ring. From above, your hand hides the simple support and the card appears to rise by itself.
The method is straightforward, so the strength of the trick comes from natural hand movement, good viewing angles and keeping attention on the apparently floating card.
Gather the Props
You need one playing card, a finger ring and an ordinary matchstick.
Choose a ring that fits comfortably on your middle finger. It should be secure enough to hold the matchstick without feeling painfully tight.
Create the Hidden Support
Put the ring on your middle finger. Slide the matchstick underneath the ring so that part of the match protrudes from each side.
The ring holds the matchstick against your finger and creates the small hidden grip that will support the card.
Secretly Grip the Card
Rest your hand palm-down on the table and slide the playing card underneath it.
Carefully guide one edge of the card between the ring and matchstick. The hidden support should grip the card firmly enough to hold it when your hand rises.
Keep this action relaxed and casual. It should look as though you are simply positioning the card beneath your hand.
Raise Your Hand
Slowly lift your hand above the table. The hidden matchstick support carries the playing card upwards with it, creating the illusion that the card is floating.
Apply only enough finger pressure to keep the card secure. Avoid stiffening your whole hand, as relaxed movement makes the levitation more convincing.
Step 5
Finish Cleanly
Once the card has apparently floated for a moment, reach across with your free hand and pluck it away from beneath the levitating hand.
Drop the card casually onto the table. This gives the audience something visible to follow while attention moves away from the hand containing the ring-and-matchstick support.
🎩 Performance Detail
Do not immediately display or examine the gimmicked hand. Let the audience's attention remain on the card you have just apparently pulled from mid-air.
Performance Tips
👀 Watch Your Angles
The illusion is strongest when spectators look from above or from the front rather than underneath your hand.
🖐 Stay Relaxed
A stiff hand suggests that something is being held. Practise keeping your fingers naturally curved.
⬆ Lift Slowly
A controlled rise gives the audience time to register the impossible image of the floating card.
🃏 Add Cards Later
Master the trick with a single card before experimenting with two or more cards.
Common Mistakes
The card slips from the support
Check that the card edge is securely positioned between the ring and matchstick before beginning the lift.
The hand looks unnaturally tense
Use less pressure. The ring and matchstick should do most of the work rather than your entire hand gripping tightly.
The audience can see the matchstick
Adjust your performance angle and keep the hand above the secret support from the audience's point of view.
The levitation happens too quickly
Raise the hand slowly and pause briefly at the top before removing the card with your free hand.
Practice Plan
1. Set the Support
Practise positioning the matchstick beneath the ring until it feels comfortable and secure.
2. Load the Card
Rehearse sliding the card into position without looking directly at the hidden grip.
3. Practise the Rise
Work on lifting your hand smoothly while keeping the card stable and your fingers relaxed.
4. Add the Finish
Practise plucking the card away and immediately directing attention towards it.
