The Effect
Several playing cards are placed beneath your hand.
When you slowly lift your hand, the cards appear to cling magnetically to your palm and rise into the air with it.
The secret is a simple handmade gimmick that allows the cards to be held securely while appearing unsupported.
Before You Begin
You will need two matching playing cards, several extra cards, paper glue or double-sided tape, and a craft knife or scissors.
Take care when cutting the gimmick. Younger magicians should ask an adult to help with this part.
Cut the Secret Flap
Carefully cut a rectangular flap into the centre of one playing card.
Leave one edge attached so the flap can bend upward.
Add the Backing Card
Place a complete matching card underneath the prepared card.
Attach the two cards with paper glue or double-sided tape, making sure the flap remains free to move.
Check the Gimmick
The two cards should now appear to be a single ordinary card.
Test the flap and confirm that it opens easily without separating the cards.
Grip the Hidden Flap
Place the gimmicked card on the table and cover it with your hand.
Secretly lift the flap and hold it between two fingers.
Add the Loose Cards
Slide several ordinary cards beneath your hand.
Position them between your fingers and the gimmicked card so they are held securely.
Lift the Cards
Slowly raise your hand into the air.
The loose cards will appear to be magnetically attracted to your palm, while they are actually supported by the flap and your fingers.
Show the Audience View
Keep the gimmicked side angled away from the audience.
From above and in front, the cards appear to be floating beneath your hand with no visible support.
Performance Tips
Practise lifting your hand slowly and evenly. Sudden movements may cause the loose cards to slip.
Keep the prepared side of the gimmick away from the audience at all times.
Do not allow the gimmicked card to be examined after the trick.
Store the gimmick flat so the flap and backing card do not bend.
Common Mistakes
Do not glue the flap shut when attaching the backing card.
Avoid adding too many loose cards until you are comfortable with the grip.
Make sure the two cards used for the gimmick have matching backs.
