The Effect

A Seemingly Free Choice

Hand a spectator a business card and ask them to insert it anywhere they like into a book you are holding.

Give the book to another audience member. They open it at the position marked by the card, read the first sentence silently and concentrate on it.

After a moment of concentration, you announce the sentence they are thinking of.

Preparation

What You Need

You need a plain-covered book and two identical business cards. The matching cards are the secret that makes the apparently impossible prediction possible.

🎩 Important

The two business cards should look identical so the audience has no reason to suspect that the card they see later is different from the one originally inserted.

Step 1

Prepare the Props

Begin with your book and two identical business cards. Keep both cards together while you prepare the trick.

A plain-covered book works well because there is less visual information for spectators to use when following its orientation.

Step 2

Memorise the Sentence

Open the book somewhere near the centre and note the first sentence on the page.

Memorise it carefully. This is the sentence you will reveal at the end of the trick.

Step 3

Set the Secret Marker

Place one business card between the pages containing your memorised sentence and close the book.

Leave approximately one centimetre of the card protruding from the top of the book.

Step 4

Present the Book

Give the second matching business card to your spectator. Hold the book lengthwise in front of them with both hands.

Keep the end containing your secretly inserted card facing towards you so the spectator cannot see it.

Step 5

Let Them Choose Any Position

Ask the spectator to insert their business card quickly between the pages at any position they choose.

From their point of view, the location is completely free. Do not draw unnecessary attention to either end of the book.

Step 6

Secretly Turn the Book

Take the book back and pass it to another member of the audience.

During this natural action, discreetly rotate the book so the end containing your pre-inserted card now faces the second spectator.

At the same time, secretly remove the first spectator's card and place it out of sight.

Step 7

Reveal Their Thought

The second spectator naturally assumes the visible card is the one that was inserted moments earlier.

Ask them to open the book at the card, silently read the first sentence and concentrate on it.

Take your time, appear to concentrate and then announce the sentence you memorised during the preparation.

Why the Trick Is Convincing

The audience remembers that the first spectator had a free choice of where to insert their business card. They also see another spectator open the book at a card that appears to be in exactly that chosen position.

The secret rotation of the book changes which business card the audience is following. Because the cards are identical, the switch is hidden inside an ordinary action.

🧠 The Real Misdirection

Do not treat the turn of the book as a secret move. Make it part of the natural action of handing the book to the next spectator.

Performance Tips

📚 Know the Sentence

Memorise the wording accurately before performing. Hesitation during the reveal weakens the effect.

↪ Keep the Turn Casual

Rotate the book naturally as you change spectators rather than making the movement look deliberate.

👀 Control Attention

Speak to the second spectator during the transfer so attention stays on your instructions.

🎭 Sell the Mind Reading

Pause before the revelation and appear to concentrate. Presentation makes the simple method much stronger.

Common Mistakes

The secret business card can be seen

Check the book's orientation before approaching the spectator and keep the prepared end facing you.

The book turn looks suspicious

Practise passing the book from one person to another until the rotation happens naturally within the transfer.

The spectator's card is difficult to remove

Have them leave a small amount protruding so you can remove it cleanly during the handover.

The final reveal feels too quick

Let the spectator concentrate on the sentence before you begin revealing it.

Presentation Idea

You can frame the effect around business, advertising, memory or receiving a mysterious message. Keep the presentation simple enough that the audience clearly remembers the important point: the spectator apparently chose any page they wanted.
