The Effect
The performer holds a deck in front of a spectator and quickly riffles through the cards.
The spectator is asked to remember any card they clearly see. After a moment of concentration, the performer correctly names the card they are thinking of.
The effect feels like genuine mind reading because the spectator believes they made a completely free mental choice.
Watch the Performance
The video below shows the performance style that inspired this version of the effect.
The Secret
The spectator is subtly encouraged to remember one particular card. A shortened card placed directly below the target card creates a small break in the deck.
When the performer riffles through the cards, the target card is exposed for a fraction longer than the surrounding cards.
This tiny difference is often enough for the spectator to notice and remember that card without realising they were influenced.
🎯 Best Choice
Use a distinctive picture card and keep other picture cards away from it so the target is easier to notice and remember.
What You’ll Need
🃏 Playing-Card Deck
Use a familiar deck in good condition so the handling looks natural.
➕ Matching Spare Card
The spare card should have the same back design as the deck.
✂️ Scissors
Used to shorten the spare card slightly across one short edge.
Choose the Target Card
Select a memorable picture card, such as a queen or king.
Keep other picture cards away from it so the target stands out during the riffle.

Create the Short Card
Take the matching spare card and trim a small strip from one of its short edges.
The card only needs to be slightly shorter than the rest of the deck. Avoid removing too much.

Position the Short Card
Place the shortened card directly below the target card.
This hidden setup creates a natural stopping point for the thumb when the deck is riffled.

Riffle the Deck
Hold the deck in front of the spectator and riffle through the outer corner at a steady pace.
When the thumb reaches the short card, the target card should remain visible for a fraction longer than the others.
The difference must be subtle. Do not obviously stop or pause.

Ask for a Mental Selection
Tell the spectator to remember any card that caught their eye.
Avoid asking which card they saw. Let them silently fix the image in their mind.

Reveal the Card
Pause, look thoughtful and slowly name the target card.
For a stronger visual finish, reveal it with a Snap Change.

Performance Tips
Keep the riffle smooth and casual. The audience should not sense that one card is being shown deliberately.
Use eye contact immediately after the riffle so the spectator focuses on remembering the card rather than analysing the deck.
Build a short pause before the reveal. The suspense makes the final answer feel more impossible.
🎩 Magic Tip
The force is strongest when the target card is distinctive, isolated from similar cards and shown only slightly longer than the rest.
Common Mistakes
Do not make the short card dramatically smaller than the others.
Avoid stopping completely when the target card appears.
Do not place several picture cards close to the target card.
Never repeat the effect immediately for the same spectator.
Avoid overacting the mind-reading moment. Calm confidence is more convincing.
Practice Plan
First, practise riffling the deck without the short card so the movement becomes relaxed and even.
Add the short card and learn to recognise its position by touch.
Record the riffle from the spectator’s viewpoint and check that the target card receives only a tiny amount of extra exposure.
Finally, rehearse the complete script and reveal without looking back at the deck.
