The Effect
Your spectator thinks of one of three cards while your back is turned. They secretly swap the positions of the other two cards and then turn all three face down.
After mixing the cards, you appear to read their mind and reveal the chosen card correctly.
This routine is sometimes known as the Blind Three Card Monte.
What You Will Need
Use the Ace of Spades, Ace of Clubs and one red Queen.
Lay Out the Three Cards
Place the two black aces and the red Queen face up in a row. Tell your spectator that you are going to turn away.
Ask them to think of one card, then secretly swap the positions of the other two cards.
Swap the Other Two Cards
For example, if the spectator chooses the Ace of Spades, they should swap the red Queen and the Ace of Clubs.
Their chosen card stays where it is.
Turn the Cards Face Down
Ask the spectator to turn all three cards face down. You can now turn back around and face the table.
Mix the Cards
Shuffle the face-down cards around to make the effect appear even more impossible.
Secretly keep track of the centre card and make sure that it finishes in the centre position.
Pick Up the Cards
Pick up the cards from left to right and hold them in your hand without changing their order.
Reveal the Thought-of Card
Fan the three cards and appear to concentrate deeply.
The secret is the middle card:
If the red Queen is in the middle, the Queen is the selected card. If a black Ace is in the middle, the other Ace is the spectator’s chosen card.
Pause for a moment, then reveal their card with confidence.
Performance Tips
Do not reveal the card too quickly. Take a few seconds to appear as though you are reading the spectator’s expression and body language.
Keep the procedure relaxed and avoid placing too much emphasis on the centre card during the mixing sequence.
This is a simple trick, but good presentation can make it feel like genuine mind reading.
