The Effect
One Coin Changes Into Another
Display a coin openly in the palm of your hand.
Slowly wave your other hand over it. As the hand passes across the coin, the visible coin visibly changes into a different coin.
The new coin can then be handed out for examination.
Preparation
What You Need
You need two different coins: one that is attracted to a magnet and one that is not.
You also need a PK ring, a finger ring containing a strong magnet which is normally available from most magic shops and suppliers. This is one of the most useful gimmicks for anyone practising coin magic and be useful in lots of performances. It should look natural when worn so spectators have no reason to suspect it.
🎩 Important Setup Detail
The magnetic coin should be large enough to completely cover the second coin when they are stacked in your palm.
Prepare the Props
Have your magnetic coin, non-magnetic coin and PK ring ready before performing.
Check that the ring attracts the magnetic coin reliably from a short distance.
Wear the PK Ring Naturally
Put the PK ring on one hand and treat it exactly like an ordinary finger ring.
Avoid touching or adjusting it unnecessarily during the trick, as that may draw attention to it.
Stack the Two Coins
Place both coins in the palm of the hand not wearing the PK ring.
Put the magnetically responsive coin on top and make sure it completely hides the lower coin from the spectator's view.
Wave Your Hand Over the Coin
Present the open palm to your spectator and explain that you are going to try something unusual.
Slowly pass the hand wearing the PK ring over the coin. Keep the movement steady and natural.
Find the Correct Distance
The upper hand should pass at roughly two centimetres above the lower palm.
As the ring passes over the magnetic coin, it should lift the upper coin away and leave the lower coin visible.
Practise several times to discover the ideal height and speed for your particular ring and coin.
Reveal the New Coin
Once the upper coin has been attracted to the ring, the lower coin is left openly visible in your palm.
Pause for a moment so the spectator can clearly register the transformation.
Invite them to pick up and examine the new coin.
Finish Cleanly
While the spectator is examining the visible coin, use this opportunity while they are distracted by examining the other coin to dispose of the hidden magnetic coin.
Drop it quietly into a pocket and continue as though nothing unusual has happened.
Why the Trick Works
At the beginning, the spectator sees only the upper coin. The second coin is hidden directly beneath it.
When the PK ring passes overhead, the magnet attracts the top coin and carries it away. The lower coin is revealed instantly, creating the appearance of a visual transformation.

The magic happens in a single visual moment. The audience does not see one coin being removed and another introduced; they simply see one coin become another.
Performance Tips
📏 Practise the Distance
Find the exact height where the ring reliably picks up the coin without touching the lower hand.
🖐 Keep the Wave Smooth
A slow, even hand movement makes the change look more magical than a sudden grab.
🔊 Cover the Click
The coin may make a small click when it meets the ring. Background noise, music or speaking at the moment of the change can help disguise it.
👀 Focus Attention Below
Keep the spectator's attention on the coin resting in your open palm rather than on the ring hand.
Common Mistakes
The lower coin becomes visible too early
Use a top coin large enough to cover the lower coin completely and keep the palm angle natural.
The ring fails to pick up the coin
Adjust the height and speed of the waving hand. Different rings and coins may require slightly different distances.
The coin makes an obvious click
Time your patter or another small sound to coincide with the pickup, and avoid snapping the ring hand down too quickly.
The hidden coin remains on the ring too long
Use the spectator's examination of the new coin as your cue to casually pocket the magnetic coin.
Practice Plan
1. Test the Magnet
Learn how strongly your PK ring attracts the selected coin.
2. Practise the Stack
Get comfortable positioning the coins so the lower one remains completely hidden.
3. Rehearse the Wave
Practise the hand pass until the pickup is reliable and the movement looks relaxed.
4. Add the Clean-Up
Rehearse handing out the visible coin while secretly disposing of the magnetic one.
