The Effect
A single Pringle or crisp rests openly in the centre of your palm.
Without squeezing it, the crisp suddenly breaks apart with a sharp snap.
The visible hand movement is minimal, making the break appear spontaneous.
What You’ll Need
🥔 One Curved Crisp
A Pringle-style crisp works especially well because it is thin, brittle and evenly curved.
⭕ Rubber Band
Choose a clean, flexible band that is not cracked or worn.
🧥 Optional Long Sleeves
Sleeves can help conceal the band around the wrist.
Place the Band Around Your Wrist
Loop the rubber band around your wrist and hand as shown.
It should sit securely without cutting into the skin.
Make a Figure-Eight
Twist the band into a figure-eight shape.
Loop the free section around your little finger so the band crosses the hand securely.
Stretch and Hold the Band
Bring the elastic across the back of your hand.
Stretch it forward and pinch it secretly between your thumb and first finger.
Keep the hand relaxed so the grip does not look suspicious.
Place the Crisp in Your Palm
Turn your hand palm up while maintaining the hidden grip.
Place the crisp in the centre of your palm, directly above the path of the stretched rubber band.
Release the Band
Release the band from between your thumb and first finger.
The rubber band snaps rapidly across the palm and strikes the underside of the crisp, causing it to break apart.
Keep the hand otherwise still so the break appears mysterious.
Why It Works
The stretched rubber band stores energy.
When released, it contracts quickly and hits the brittle crisp from below.
Because the audience focuses on the crisp and your open palm, they are unlikely to notice the concealed band or release.
Presentation Ideas
Pretend you are concentrating heat or invisible pressure into the crisp.
Build suspense by holding your free hand above it without touching.
You could also present it as a demonstration of “psychic energy” or an unusual party challenge.
🎩 Magic Tip
Pause before releasing the band. The moment of stillness makes the sudden snap much more surprising.
Performance Tips
Wear long sleeves when possible to help hide the wrist loop.
Keep the rubber band on the back of the hand and outside the audience’s direct view.
Use a fresh, undamaged crisp. Soft or cracked crisps may not break cleanly.
Perform over a plate, tray or table for easy cleanup.
Common Mistakes
Do not use a rubber band that is too weak or too loose.
Avoid placing the crisp too far from the band’s path.
Do not visibly squeeze the crisp with your fingers.
Keep the thumb-and-finger release small and natural.
Never aim the broken pieces toward another person.
Practice Exercise
Rehearse the setup without a crisp until you can turn the hand palm up without exposing the rubber band.
Practise releasing the band over a folded towel or tray.
Once the action is reliable, test it with inexpensive crisps and adjust their position in your palm.
