The Effect

A deck is shuffled and spread briefly as though you are memorizing the order of all fifty-two cards.

The deck is then placed behind your back.

You bring the pack forward, hold it face up toward the spectator and correctly name the card they can see.

The deck goes behind your back again, and you repeat the feat with the next card.

You can continue for as many cards as you wish.

What You’ll Need

🃏 Standard Deck

Any ordinary pack of playing cards will work.

👤 One Spectator

A single spectator makes the viewing angle easier to control.

🎭 Convincing Acting

The trick depends on selling the idea that you are genuinely memorizing the deck.

The Secret

You do not memorize the deck.

Instead, you secretly glimpse one card at a time and use the card facing you as the information for the next reveal.

The behind-the-back action allows you to move cards into position without the spectator seeing.

Step 1

Shuffle and Pretend to Memorize

Shuffle the deck and explain that you have developed an unusual ability to remember the order of playing cards.

Spread through the faces slowly and pretend to concentrate on the sequence.

Step 2

Secretly Glimpse the Bottom Card

Square the deck and casually glimpse the bottom card.

Remember this card. It will become the first card you name.

Step 3

Move the Card Behind Your Back

Place the deck behind your back.

Remove the bottom card and place it face up on top of the deck.

Keep the rest of the deck face down.

Step 4

Show the First Card

Bring the deck forward and hold it so the face-up top card points toward the spectator.

Name the card you previously glimpsed.

As the spectator looks at that card, casually glimpse the card now facing you. That is the next card in the sequence.

Step 5

Repeat the Process

Return the deck behind your back.

Move the current bottom card face up to the top.

Bring the deck forward, name it and glimpse the next card facing you.

Continue for ten to twenty cards, or stop sooner if the audience is already impressed.

Why It Works

The spectator believes you are recalling a memorized order.

In reality, each reveal secretly provides the information needed for the next one.

The deck going behind your back seems necessary for concentration, but it actually gives you time to move the next card into position.

Performance Tips

Do not rush the opening spread. Make the memorization look serious.

Hold the deck naturally when bringing it forward.

Keep each glimpse brief and casual.

Stop before the procedure becomes repetitive.

🎩 Magic Tip

Ask the spectator to concentrate on the card facing them. This gives you a natural reason to look at the opposite side of the deck and glimpse the next card.

Common Mistakes

Do not stare at the card you are secretly glimpsing.

Avoid fumbling while the deck is behind your back.

Make sure only one card is turned face up at a time.

Keep the deck oriented correctly throughout the routine.

Do not repeat the effect for too long.

Practice Plan

Practise moving the bottom card to the top behind your back without looking.

Rehearse the glimpse while holding the deck toward an imaginary spectator.

Run through ten cards in sequence until the rhythm feels natural.

Finally, add the memory presentation and perform the complete routine for a friend.

Presentation Ideas

Present the trick as photographic memory.

Ask the spectator to shuffle before you begin.

Pause before each answer as though searching through a mental image of the deck.

Finish by naming several cards more quickly to create a strong climax.
