The Riffle Shuffle
The Riffle Shuffle is one of the most recognisable ways to mix a deck of cards. It is used by magicians, card players and professional dealers alike.
Besides genuinely shuffling the deck, it also forms the basis for many advanced false shuffles where the deck appears to be mixed while secretly remaining in order.
Before You Begin
Use a deck that is in good condition. Worn or bent cards are much harder to shuffle smoothly.
Practise over a table at first so dropped cards are easy to collect.
Split the Deck
Divide the deck into two packets of roughly equal size.
Hold one packet in each hand with your thumbs resting along the inner edges and your fingers supporting the outer edges.
Bring the Packets Together
Move the inner corners of both packets together until they lightly touch.
Keep the packets aligned and level.
Release the Cards
Bend the inner corners slightly with your thumbs.
Slowly release pressure so the cards fall alternately from each packet and weave together.
Square the Deck
Push the interlaced packets together until the deck is fully squared.
Lightly tap the edges against the table if necessary to neaten the pack.

Let the cards fall under their own weight. Trying to force them together usually causes uneven shuffles.
Begin with slow, controlled movements rather than trying to produce the familiar riffling sound.
Once your accuracy improves, gradually increase your speed while keeping the packets evenly aligned.
Practise with both new and well-used decks so you become comfortable handling different card stocks.
Common Mistakes
Holding the packets too tightly prevents the cards from falling evenly.
Bending the cards too far can permanently damage the deck.
Unequal packet sizes make the shuffle look untidy and harder to control.
