The Effect
An ordinary plastic drinks bottle is shown and its contents are poured out.
A matching coin is borrowed from a spectator.
The coin is struck against the base of the bottle and appears to pass straight through the plastic.
The coin can then be seen trapped inside the bottle, where it is clearly too large to pass through the neck.
What You’ll Need
🧴 Clear Plastic Bottle
Choose one with a paper or plastic label that can conceal a small slit.
🪙 Two Matching Coins
The coins must be attracted to a magnet and too large to pass through the bottle neck.
🧲 Small Strong Magnet
A compact neodymium magnet works well for holding the hidden coin behind the label.
✂️ Cutting Tool
Used only during preparation to make a hidden slit.
Secret Preparation
The bottle already contains one duplicate coin.
That coin is held secretly behind the label with a small magnet. The borrowed coin never penetrates the plastic.
Make a Hidden Slit
Peel back the bottle label slightly at its join.
Cut a narrow slit in the plastic beneath the label, just large enough for the duplicate coin to pass through.
Keep the slit within the area that will be covered when the label is replaced.
Insert the Duplicate Coin
Push one matching coin through the slit and into the bottle.
Press the label back into place so the opening is concealed.
Add a small amount of suitable adhesive only if the original label no longer sticks securely.
Hold the Coin Behind the Label
Lay the bottle on its side and move the hidden coin beneath the centre of the label.
Place the magnet against the outside of the bottle so it grips the coin through the plastic.
Test that the bottle can be moved gently without the coin falling.
Add the Liquid
Pour some of the original drink or water back into the bottle.
Keep the liquid level below the hidden slit to avoid leaks.
The liquid lets you pour from the bottle during performance and strengthens the impression that it is ordinary.
Display the Bottle
Hold the bottle with the magnet side facing your body.
Cover the small magnet naturally with your thumb.
Keep the label facing the audience so it conceals the hidden coin.
Show the Bottle Naturally
Handle the bottle casually and avoid calling unnecessary attention to the label.
Never show the bottle directly edge-on, as the hidden coin may be visible beneath the label.
Optional Rotating Display
Hold the magnet steady with your thumb while slowly rotating the bottle by its base.
The bottle turns between the magnet and hidden coin, giving the impression that the audience has seen more of the container.
This is an advanced handling detail and should be omitted until it looks completely natural.
Pour Out the Bottle
Remove the cap and pour out the liquid.
Keep the hidden coin above the liquid level so the drink passes beneath it.
This action reinforces the idea that the bottle is empty and normal.
Create the Penetration
Borrow the matching coin and hold it against the base of the bottle.
Strike the coin sharply against the plastic.
At the same moment, reduce the pressure holding the magnet so the duplicate coin drops from behind the label into the bottle.
The sound and sudden movement conceal the fall.
Dispose of the Borrowed Coin
The audience will look immediately at the coin inside the bottle.
Use that moment to retain the borrowed coin in finger palm or classic palm and place it discreetly into a pocket.
Do not rush. Their attention should remain on the impossible object.
Remove the Magnet
Keep the thumb pressed against the magnet after the coin drops.
As the bottle is handed out, allow the magnet to remain against the thumb and then put it away discreetly.
Hand Out the Bottle
The bottle can now be examined because the duplicate coin is genuinely trapped inside.
The slit remains concealed beneath the label.
For a souvenir finish, cut the bottle open later and return the matching coin to the spectator.
Why the Illusion Works
The borrowed coin and duplicate coin are visually identical.
The impact against the bottle provides sound, motion and misdirection.
The falling duplicate is difficult to see during the strike, and the audience naturally assumes the visible coin is the one they just lent.
The final examination is powerful because the bottle really does contain a solid coin.
Bottle-Cap Variation
The same broad principle can be adapted to make a bottle cap appear inside the container.
Prepare an identical cap with a small magnetic piece concealed inside, then use a duplicate cap already hidden in the bottle.
Test the cap and magnet thoroughly before performance.
Easier Magnet Setup
An alternative is to secure the magnet beneath the label rather than holding it with the thumb.
This simplifies some handling but makes the bottle less examinable until the magnet has been removed or concealed.
Quick Impromptu Version
Use a small duplicate coin that fits inside the bottle cap.
Secretly place that coin inside the cap while showing the bottle.
Replace the cap and keep the bottle tilted slightly downward.
When striking the borrowed coin against the base, tilt the bottle upward so the duplicate falls from the cap into the bottle.
This version requires less preparation but usually offers less freedom when showing the bottle.
Folding Coin Alternative
A commercially made folding coin can also create a coin-in-bottle effect.
That method uses specialist magic apparatus and should be learned from the manufacturer’s instructions.
Performance Tips
Keep the label facing the audience throughout the prepared phase.
Use the same coin type for both the duplicate and borrowed coin.
Strike the bottle firmly enough to create sound but not hard enough to damage the container.
Rehearse the coin palm and magnet disposal separately.
🎩 Magic Tip
Let the spectator focus on the trapped coin before handing out the bottle. The impossible image is the strongest form of misdirection in the routine.
Common Mistakes
Do not let the bottle turn far enough for the hidden coin to show.
Avoid filling the bottle above the concealed slit.
Make sure the duplicate coin is strongly attracted to the magnet.
Do not use a coin small enough to pass through the bottle neck.
Practise the release so the magnet remains under control.
Practice Plan
First test the magnet strength and hidden coin position.
Rehearse pouring the liquid while keeping the coin above it.
Practise the impact and duplicate release over a soft surface.
Add the borrowed-coin palm only when the release is reliable.
Finally, rehearse the complete sequence with the bottle label always facing the correct direction.
