The Effect
A normal orange rests in your open palm.
You concentrate on it, and the orange slowly rises and falls as though floating above your hand.
The effect can be performed at close range when the audience is positioned in front of you.

What You’ll Need
🍊 Fresh Orange
Choose a medium-sized orange that sits comfortably in your palm.
🥄 Spoon Handle
Optional for carefully preparing the hidden thumb opening.
🎭 Presentation
Slow movement and convincing concentration sell the illusion.

Prepare the Orange
Secretly make a small opening in one side of the orange, deep enough to accept your thumb securely.
A spoon handle can help form the opening neatly.
Keep the prepared side turned away from the audience at all times.

Take the Secret Grip
Insert your thumb into the hidden opening and let the orange rest naturally in your palm.
Keep the other fingers relaxed so the grip does not look suspicious.
From the front, the missing thumb should appear to be hidden naturally behind the orange.

Create the Levitation
Pretend to concentrate intensely on the orange.
Slowly move your hidden thumb upward so the orange rises from your palm.
Lower the thumb again to make the orange settle back into your hand. Small, smooth movements look more magical than a large lift.

Finish Cleanly
Let the orange return fully to your palm.
Quietly remove your thumb while keeping the prepared opening hidden.
Briefly show the open hand, then place the orange on the table with the secret side facing down or away from the audience.
Viewing Angles
Keep spectators directly in front of you and slightly above hand level.
Avoid side views that may reveal the thumb entering the orange.
Turn your wrist naturally so the prepared opening always faces your body.
Practise in front of a mirror or camera before performing at close range.
Performance Tips
Use slow breathing and a focused expression to make the levitation feel difficult.
Keep the rise small and controlled. A few centimetres is enough.
Pause briefly at the highest point so the audience can register the effect.
Move into another trick or casual conversation after placing the orange down.
🎩 Magic Tip
Look at the orange rather than at your hand. The audience will follow your gaze and focus on the apparent floating movement.
Common Mistakes
Do not make the hidden opening larger than necessary.
Avoid lifting the orange too high.
Keep the supporting thumb hidden throughout the movement.
Do not allow spectators to stand behind or beside you.
Avoid handing out the prepared orange after the trick.
Practice Plan
First practise holding the orange naturally with the hidden grip.
Rehearse raising it only one or two centimetres.
Record the effect from the audience’s angle and check that the thumb remains hidden.
Add your concentration presentation after the movement looks smooth.
