The Effect
A banknote is displayed openly on the magicianâs palm.
Without being touched, it begins to move and fold itselfâfirst in half, then sideways, and finally into a neat compact packet.
The secret uses invisible thread, a small amount of clear tape and a simple anchor hidden in your pocket.
Before You Begin
You will need a banknote, invisible magicianâs thread or very fine black nylon thread, clear tape and a fine sewing needle.
Use a note that you do not mind preparing. Work carefully when threading it, and avoid making the hole larger than necessary.
Lighting is important. Bright backlighting can expose invisible thread, so practise in the same kind of lighting you expect during performance.
Understand the Final Effect
The note should begin fully opened on your palm and then fold itself gradually into quarters.
Practise the overall movement first so you know the speed and rhythm you want to achieve.
Pre-Fold the Banknote
Fold the note in half three times, following the crease pattern shown in the photograph.
Press the folds firmly so the note naturally wants to return to those positions during the performance.
Thread the Note
Using a fine needle, carefully pass the invisible thread through the middle section of the folded note.
Choose a darker printed area where the tiny hole will be less noticeable. A piece of wood beneath the note can help protect your fingers.
Secure the Thread
Pull the thread through and attach it to the neighbouring fold with a small piece of clear tape.
Keep the tape as small and flat as possible so it does not interfere with the folding action.
Create the Anchor
Leave around 12â15 inches of thread, adjusting the length to suit your natural hand position.
Attach the free end to a small weighted object in your front pocket, such as a wallet or card box. This acts as the anchor.
Read through the complete handling and test the distance before trimming the thread permanently.
Open the Prepared Note
Carefully unfold the note while leaving enough slack in the thread for it to rest flat.
A small amount of slack helps the first movement look more mysterious before the folds begin.
Position the Note on Your Palm
Rest the opened note flat on your palm. Guide the thread between your fingers so it runs unnoticed from beneath your hand into your pocket.
Hold your arm in a relaxed, natural position. The correct thread length depends on this position.
Performing the Trick
Begin with the banknote folded when you remove it from your pocket. Open it casually and allow it to rest on your palm.
To make the note fold, slowly move your hand away from your body. As the thread tightens, the note will follow its prepared creasesâfirst folding in half, then across, and finally into a small packet.
Once the fold is complete, grip the note between your thumb and fingers and place it back into your pocket.
Performance Tips
Practise in front of a mirror until the folding speed looks gradual and natural.
Avoid dark clothing behind the thread. A light, non-reflective background usually helps keep it hidden.
Do not perform with a strong light source behind you, because reflected light may reveal the thread.
Keep your hand movement small and relaxed. The audience should focus on the folding note rather than on your arm.
Do not hand the prepared note out for examination after the effect.
